Account matching
Account matching is the step that attaches each person on a list to the company account they belong to, usually by email domain, and finds that account in the CRM so every contact inherits its owner and history.
How does account matching work?
- Find the domain. A work email carries one; a personal address or a bare company name needs domain resolution first.
- Match on the domain, then check company-name variants for the rows it misses.
- Match people too: email first, then name plus company, to catch a contact already in your CRM under another address.
- Flag whatever stays unmatched or ambiguous for a person to review.
Why does it matter?
Match accounts before you judge any of them. Miss a match and you get a false net-new, where your team treats an existing customer or an open deal as a stranger. The rep who spots it stops trusting your list.
The share of rows that match is your list’s match rate. It limits every step after it, from your account labels to your coverage gap.
