Event-driven GTM

Event-driven GTM is a go-to-market approach in which events are a primary pipeline source, so the company plans, staffs, and measures them as a revenue channel.

The phrase describes a company. Your company is event-driven when your leaders already believe events produce pipeline and your calendar is dense enough that the work has a rhythm. Your leaders must also hold someone accountable for what the channel returns.

If you run roughly 20 or more events a year, you likely fit the pattern. At that volume, it shows up reliably. FieldXM’s founder ran events this way at 3 B2B software companies across 300+ events, and the FieldXM thesis describes the approach.

What distinguishes an event-driven company?

Event-driven GTM differs from attending events on 3 markers:

  • Conviction: your leadership treats events as a pipeline channel. This belief predicts whether your company acts on the problem better than your event count does.
  • Volume: you run enough events that coordination, capture, and follow-up recur often enough to need a system.
  • Accountability: your company measures an owner on what the channel contributes, even when that owner doesn’t control the sales work that produces it.

Why does event-driven GTM break?

Event-driven GTM spans your whole company, and it has never had a system of its own. Your CRM stores outcomes, badge scanners capture names, and project tools track tasks. Your event managers coordinate the work between teams: targeting accounts, covering them, capturing conversations, and following up. They run it on spreadsheets and heroics.

The failure repeats in the same 3 acts everywhere: coordination fails before the event, capture fails during it, and follow-up fails after it.

How do you recognize it in practice?

Ask what share of pipeline your company attributes to events, how many events run through each manager, and who is accountable for follow-up. Event-driven companies answer the first 2 questions quickly. The answer to the third is usually a person, which is where in-person GTM operations begins.
