In-person GTM operations

In-person GTM operations is the discipline of running the in-person channel as a managed workflow, covering account targeting, coverage, capture, follow-up enforcement, and measurement across every team involved.

The term names the job of running in-person GTM. Revenue operations applied this discipline to digital pipeline years ago. In-person GTM operations extends it to your events.

What does the work consist of?

The work runs in 3 acts:

  • Before the event: match your target list to your CRM, tier the accounts so your reps trust the list and don’t research it again, assign owners, and see your coverage gap before the plane takes off.
  • During the event: capture who engaged which buyers, and what they said, including the executive dinner and the hallway conversation that never touch a badge scanner.
  • After the event: give every interaction your team captured an owner, a clock, and a status you can see, then tie the result to pipeline.

Why is it a distinct discipline?

The work crosses sales, marketing, SDRs, customer success, and your executive team, and it lives in none of their systems. You own the metric and answer for the outcome. You don’t own the work, and the people who do it don’t report to you. When work that spans teams doesn’t have a home, it falls back on spreadsheets, Slack threads, and one over-extended person’s memory.

Events leaders hit the same coordination failure, regardless of their company’s size or available tools.

“It’s pretty manual and gross right now.”

How do you recognize maturity?

The event operations maturity model describes the stages. Here’s the short test for last quarter’s flagship show. Can your team say which target accounts were there, who engaged them, and what they said? Can it say whether anyone followed up, and what pipeline resulted, without piecing it together by hand?

Today, the operators who run this well are heroes, and heroes don’t scale. The discipline exists so your results survive the hero’s vacation.
