The event capture gap
The event capture gap is the difference between the substantive conversations a company has at events and the share of them that reach the CRM with useful context, a loss that varies with staffing and enforcement.
Buyers at different companies describe the same loss in their own words: badge scans that record a name and nothing else, reps typing on phones while the buyer talks, and context that fades as soon as the conversation ends. Watch for all 3 at your next show.
Your executive conversations are the most valuable ones your company has at an event, and they disappear the same way. Your reps’ notes and memories rarely survive a noisy expo floor and a red-eye home.
“Like, oh my gosh, none. The conversation itself, definitely not.”

Why doesn’t the gap have a single number?
The numbers buyers report don’t measure the same thing yet. One estimates notes among selected leads, another counts notes-form completion, and a third looks back and guesses what changes when one heroic operator is on the floor.
The reports agree on the shape. Context loss happens everywhere, and its size swings widely between companies. The swing tracks booth staffing and capture enforcement more than company size or tooling.
How do you measure the gap?
You need a consistent denominator to measure the gap. Use the standard metric, the event conversation capture rate: how many of the substantive booth conversations made it onto the right CRM contact or account inside 72 hours. Each conversation has to carry at least one useful pain point, product interest, or next step.
Write down what you counted and how: the conversations, the ones that landed, the event type, who staffed the booth, the capture path, and how you audited it. Then the gap becomes a number your team can move. Until then, it’s a repeated failure with concrete incidents.
